About

Hi, I’m Jon Marie—family historian, social media strategist, and the heart behind The Simple Living Genealogy.

For decades, I’ve been tracing the roots of my family tree and learning how the choices of those before me shaped who I am today. This blog is a space where I document that journey, sharing not only the discoveries I’ve made but the questions I’m still exploring.

Inside The Vault, you’ll find a collection of stories and reflections grouped into four main categories:

  • Roots & Reflections – personal stories, ancestor profiles, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way

  • The Social Sphere – tips and insights on using social media to connect with the genealogy community and share your story

  • Books & Beyond – thoughtful reviews and reflections on books that have inspired me, especially around identity, memory, and family

  • Tools & Templates – practical guides, prompts, and resources to help simplify your own research and storytelling

Whether you’re here to feel more connected to your past, grow your virtual genealogy community, or just love reading stories that matter, you’re in the right place.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope The Vault inspires you to explore your own story, one piece at a time.

How Many Facebook Groups Is Too Many for a Genealogist?
It is easy to join a Facebook Group. It is much harder to truly belong to one. For family historians, genealogists, and society members, Facebook Groups can feel like a goldmine. One group helps with DNA. Another focuses on a county in Ohio. Another shares old photographs. Another talks about methodology. Before long, you are in dozens of groups, maybe more, and what once felt exciting starts to feel heavy. You are not imagining it. Group overload is real.
