Understanding Facebook’s Professional Dashboard

For many genealogists who begin sharing research stories or educational tips on Facebook, a quiet question eventually appears in the background.
Is anyone actually seeing this?
Facebook provides a tool that helps answer that question. It is called the Professional Dashboard.
The Professional Dashboard becomes available when someone activates Professional Mode on their personal Facebook profile. Once enabled, the dashboard offers a simple overview of how people interact with the content you share.
At first glance, the idea of analytics can feel intimidating. Numbers and graphs may sound more like marketing than genealogy. But the purpose of this dashboard is not to turn family history into a numbers game. Its purpose is simply to provide insight.
Inside the Professional Dashboard, you can see how your posts are performing. You may notice how many people viewed a post, how often it was shared, or how many comments it generated. These patterns help reveal what types of posts encourage conversation within the genealogy community.
For example, you might discover that a short research tip attracts quick engagement, while a longer ancestor story encourages thoughtful discussion. Another post may reach people outside your immediate network when others share it with their own followers.
These insights are useful because they show you how your contributions are helping others. A post you wrote in a few minutes may answer a question someone has been struggling with for years. A photograph you shared might spark recognition from a distant relative.
The Professional Dashboard does not change the heart of genealogy work. Research still happens in archives, libraries, and historical records. But it helps illuminate how knowledge travels through the community once it is shared.
Another benefit of the dashboard is that it tracks follower growth. When someone chooses to follow your profile, it means they value the information you are sharing. Over time, this creates a wider circle of people who learn from and interact with your posts.
For genealogists who teach, write, or speak about family history, this can become an important bridge between events. Someone who attends a lecture may later follow your profile to continue learning from your posts.
The Professional Dashboard simply helps you see that process unfolding.
How to Access the Professional Dashboard
Before you can use the Professional Dashboard, Professional Mode must be enabled on your personal Facebook profile.
To find it:
Open your Facebook profile.
Click the three dots near your profile header.
Look for Professional Mode and turn it on.
Once activated, you will see a Professional Dashboard option appear on your profile.
Inside the dashboard, Facebook gathers information about how people interact with the posts you share publicly.
You do not need to study every number. Instead, focus on a few simple indicators that reveal how your posts are connecting with others.
The most helpful areas to pay attention to are:
Post Reach: This shows how many people saw your post. A higher reach often means your content is reaching beyond your immediate network.
Engagement includes reactions, comments, and shares. In genealogy conversations, comments are especially valuable because they often lead to discussion, additional records, or research ideas.
Follower Growth: If people choose to follow your profile, it means they want to see more of the genealogy content you share.
Top Performing Posts: The dashboard often highlights which posts received the most attention. These patterns can quietly teach you what types of posts resonate most with the genealogy community.
How Professional Genealogists Can Use the Dashboard
For professional genealogists, the Professional Dashboard can offer insight into how educational content reaches the community.
For example, a professional genealogist might share a short research tip explaining how to interpret land records. If that post receives many shares or comments, it suggests that land record interpretation is a topic many researchers are interested in learning more about.
Another post might tell a short story about breaking through a difficult research problem. If readers respond with questions or share their own experiences, that signals strong community engagement.
Over time, the Professional Dashboard can help professionals notice which topics generate the most curiosity or discussion. These insights can help guide future blog topics, presentations, or educational content.
How Society Leaders Can Use the Dashboard
Board members and volunteers who share society updates from their personal profiles can also benefit from the dashboard.
For example, a board member might share a post announcing an upcoming workshop or lecture. By looking at the reach and engagement, they can see how widely that information traveled beyond the society’s immediate membership.
If an event announcement receives many comments or shares, it may indicate strong interest in that topic. Future programming could then explore similar subjects.
Society volunteers might also notice that posts featuring historical photographs or local history stories generate strong engagement. That insight can help societies highlight the types of content that resonate most with their community.
What the Professional Dashboard Does Not Replace
It is important to remember that the Professional Dashboard does not change the heart of genealogy.
Family history research is still built on careful investigation. Records still need to be located, interpreted, and documented. Stories still need to be preserved with accuracy and respect for the people who lived them.
The dashboard simply offers a small window into how the knowledge you share travels through the community.
It might show that a research tip helped other genealogists. It might reveal that an ancestor story sparked thoughtful conversation. It might even highlight how far a historical photograph traveled once others began sharing it.
But those numbers do not define the value of the work.
The real impact of genealogy often happens quietly. A reader may save a post and return to it later while researching their own family. A distant cousin might see a name that leads to a new connection. A society member might feel encouraged to attend their first meeting.
Those moments rarely appear in analytics.
The Professional Dashboard simply helps illuminate part of the journey.
The research, the discovery, and the preservation of family history will always remain at the center of what genealogists do.
The dashboard just helps you see how your voice contributes to the conversation.
